February 29, 2008, Newsletter Issue #32: Finding A New Nesting Place For Your Junk Car

Tip of the Week

Did you know that leaving your junked car parked in a field or abandoned lot is detrimental to the delicate biodiversity in the area?  For example, Illinois is host to some 25,000 species of insects, over 3,000 species of plants, 200 species of fish, 100 species of birds, about 100 species of reptiles and amphibians, 79 species of fresh water mussels and even 29 species of crayfish.  Of course, these aren't all living around your junked car, but there is the very real potential of harming any number of flora, fauna, insects and animals (domestic and wild) through junk car contamination.

What's the difference in junking your car on your own property or having it carted off to another?  Well, junk towing companies don't just throw the vehicle into a field somewhere.  In fact, they'd be more than happy to donate your junked car to a charity.

Whether you're calling for a junk yard in Ohio or a junk yard in Michigan, it doesn't matter.  The point is that you'll be protecting biodiversity and aiding a charity.
